STEP FIVE
Leon meets Nort and his devotees at the church with the contents of the skin’s Abstract imprint. He devolops an imperfect personality to use to infiltrate ImpCorp, based on the skin’a Abstract experiences. With renewed confidence in his control in The Abstract, he returns to the memory of his mother. He pushes to connect with his mother’s conscious, but the Jade Rhino appears. He wililingly abandons The Real: dismissing Suunto, the team and Impcorp, to be cosumed.
Sequence One
Nort will only dive with Leon, accompanied by his acolytes. Leon is fearful of the acolytes being involved in a deeply personal experience, and of the Jade Rhino returning. Nort explains the acolytes will secure their tether to The Real and enable them to work quickly and undetected. Leon must compile his skin and remain undetected by The Jade Rhino.
CDQ -
Will Leon be able to build a skin and remain undetected by The Jade Rhino?
Sequence Two
Leon, Nort and the acolytes dive deep, using the memory of his mother as an entry point. The chaos behind The Abstract, and a desire to work on the memory of his mother tempts him, but he knows he needs to create a skin. He delves into the skin’s Abstract Imprint, finding an unadventurous man, beaten down by the regularity of his existence. After struggling to maintain his focus, Leon finds the moment that defines the skin’s journey. An incomplete but workable skin takes form. It is far below his usual standards, and Leon hopes it will be enough.
Sequence Three
Leon convinces Nort to dwell awhile on his mother’s memory. Leon uses the broken tendrils to reach for other consciousnesses and deepen the memory. Nort warns him he is reaching too far, the acolytes are struggling and he needs to return to Suunto with the skin. Leon knows he should, but he senses a greater conscious, full of memory and reaches deeply for it. The Jade Rhino appears. He is terrified and reaches back to The Real, but he has lost his tether. He can see Nort, risking his own tether, stretched to breaking point in order to reach him, but he turns away. The Jade Rhino absorbs Leon’s memory of his mother. Lost, Leon reaches out, embracing the salvation it offers.
CDQ Answer
No. Leon is able to make a skin, but the Jade Rhino finds him, absorbs his mother’s memory and takes him.
Character Arc
Leon moves from nervous, slightly fearful, but also intrigued — to — terrified, experiencing a sense of inevitability, and hope for salvation and peace.
Moral Dilemma
The increasing his risk of losing his connection to The Real, the team and the job, and being taken by The Jade Rhino, vs following the temptation to dive deeper and finding out more about the memory of his mother and childhood.
Ms. Penumbra Sequence One
Ms Penumbra is exhausted and struggles to download her memories from an organic drive implanted in her brain to a machine. She is forced to shed an aspect of her past - a teenage relationship - that corrupts the present data. An Executive contact repeatedly calls. She senses his urgency, but she cannot take it. The machine sedates her and she slips into a semi-conscious state. She floats in memories that sustain her: Emmet, a rainforest, and a longing to be loved again.
CDQ
Will Ms. Penumbra find out why her Executive member needs to make contact so urgently?
Ms. Penumbra Sequence Two
Ms. Penumbra wakes, her memory cached and accessible. Ironically, Variel’s enhancements have worked. Was she too hasty in killing him? She calls her contact with her private mind pocket. The desperate contact negotiates a release from her blackmail before telling her the Executive plan to copy Ms. Penumbra’s mind and data vault when they transition her. Ms. Pemumbra is impressed by the ruthless audacity of the Executive’s decision. She knows that if they get access to her mind and secrets, they will permanently terminate her. She must find a way to prevent them scanning her as she transitions.
CDQ Answer
Yes, but she now realises that The Executive are prepared to deal with her in the way she would deal with them: ruthlessly, with little morality. The stakes are much higher than she anticipated.
Character Arc
Ms. Penumbra moves from exhausted and struggling to concentrate — to — concerned by the Executive’s audacity and lack of morality to invade her mind and terrified by their preventing her entering The Abstract.
Moral Dilemma
The discarding of her memory of a teenage relationship, one that was important to her, in order to protect the memories of the present day. The releasing of a valuable contact, so close to the end of her plan, in exchange for her information.
Their scanning of her mind during the transition is something she must avoid. Does she have to rely on Leon and Nort to help her transition outside of The Abstract? Maybe Ms. Penumbra and Leon have to deep dive together outside of ImpCorp in order to access the door they have left open a crack?
CDQ Answer - Yes, Leon is able to establish a tether to The Real, with Nort’s help, but The Jade Rhino .
CA - Leon moves from excited and nervous — to — filled with both fear and rapture at the presence of The Jade Rhino.
Moral Dilemma:
- Abandoning the impossible ImpCorp mission and protecting Suunto by taking on a high-risk infiltration, with little preparation.
- following his desire to dive with Nort and protecting the fragile trust his team has shown in him.
- Whether to trust Nort to help him tether to The Real, when he worships The Jade Rhino.
- Abandoning The Real when the Jade Rhino appears - he does without much struggle…
SEQ
Return to the memory of his mother. He calls out to her. He gets a sense. The Jade Rhino appears. He gives himself, despite Nort trying to hold him back. Something yerns for it.
He glimpses and feels his mother - sensory like a child, not the one in the memory, before being ripped back to The Real.
He is bound by ImpCorp security and very confused.
Nort is surprised to meet Leon at his church. They chat of the Jade Rhino. Both senses something in the last dive. Nort is hesitant to dive, but Leon insists. Nort counters with needed the protection and support of the acolytes. They can watch and they can draw on them to do what they need to do quicker. Leon knows he needs to work quickly, so he agrees. The acolytes assemble, Leon uploads the skin’s Abstract Imprint and he dives. He feels a web-like connection to the acolytes and an unnatural power surge within him and the rush of The Abstract fills him. His link to The Real wavers and he exists between heartbeats. He can feel time slow and he draws on the acolytes to analyse the Abstract Imprint. He feels the pull of the chaos behind the order. He is distracted and struggles to remember why he is there. He summons the Abstract Imprint and examines it by clearing his own senses. It has always been an advantage to not have memories of his own. He can slip someone else inside his own consciousness and let them permeate through him. His mind, and his AI, does the rest. He sees him though his memories. He feels the imprint of his thoughts, memories and emotions, starting with the present day and following the threads of the reactions and emotions back to where he first experienced them. He invades his mind and feels a short pang of guilt as he explores the more personal memories. There are no lovers, no close physical friends, just memories of a family gone, work colleagues and some sort of belonging to an organisation that provides the regularity he craves, and a life of no surprises. Even his Abstract Imprint is filled with no risk moments. Solitude, peace and family memories. He senses enough of the man to realise he is an introvert and only has the urge to speak if required. It will make it easier when he is inside, as no-one will be looking to have a conversation with him, but it will make him harder to interpret and to learn his dialogue. He senses a moment where he felt the world was more than it is now. When he was younger, when the world was waking to the possibilities of The Abstract. He felt something there that awoke the possibilities in him. In Albany of all places. A violent storm crashing against the rugged coastline, sea spray flying twenty meters in the air. He felt something there. He was alive and aware of the endless power of The Real. It scared and fascinated him. He longed for it though. He had spent the rest of his life in the city, in the circle of a few blocks between work and home and The Abstract. He ignored The Real and dwelt on The Abstract. He did not want to acknowledge the nature that made him feel something primal, although it called to him in some way. If he answered it, he knew something would awaken in him. He was not ready for that to happen. Leon knew that this was his time to awaken him. He tries to find out more, but he cannot find anything about his inner workings. He concentrates on his mannerisms, pitch and tone and the look of him. He feeds back to his AI in his body, after searching for the connection for a while, and enables it to start calculating what he will need to do to his body to enable him to look like the skin. They are closely resembled, so it should not be too much to create a passing resemblance. He just needs to modify his voice, have a few phrases and practice his gestures. He knows he has not got enough, but it will have to be enough. He has an idea of his inner psyche. He just needs to work on the external mannerisms. That can be quickly refined the help of the AI. He hopes it is enough. But given he has no other options, it is the best he can do.
Nort motions for him them to go, but Leon wishes to search for his memories. Nort concedes and they delve into Leon’s only memories. He can sense it, slightly narrower than before, and he pushes the boundaries of what his memory is, only to find the edges that were once sprouting, reaching tendrils, severed. He shifts his focus to the memory and pushes at the boundaries of it. He summons The Abstract into it, and he sees the tendril reform and start to stretch out into The Abstract. Nort is astounded, and he can feel the acolytes reach with him. His heartbeat slows even more as he merges more with The Abstract. He pushes the scope of his memory and the world around it starts to appear, based on what The Abstract knows of the time and place. Leon can sense the consciousnesses of other people who must have seen the room at one point. Fragments of their experience flow into the room. There are so many of them. It astounds him. Boom. Another heatbeat. He brushes it aside. Even his heartbeat is reminding him of a body that is getting in the way of discovery. Nort walks the memory with him as it solidifies around him. Their senses start to fill with a new reality. Leon senses movement behind him, and he sees a little hand on the doorframe of a nearby room. And another. Leon’s attention is drawn to them, but he cannot sense who they are, or a consiousness connected to them. He then thinks of his mother. If she is in this memory, then she will may also have link to her conscious. He returns to her and she starts to move. She starts to flow with life and Leon hones his abilities into her. He can sense her thought, her emotion and the essence of her. Nort warns him not to go too far, but he delves into her conscious somehow, and gets a sense of her. He can feel the thread of her spreading far back through The Abstact, to a faraway place, beyond ImpCorp, beyond his presence, to another place, further, deeper than he has ever known. His memory starts to tinge green. He has a niggling sensation that he should return. He has lost his heartbeat, but dismisses it. He does not need a heartbeat when he can be part of this. He can sense something pulling at him and he tries to cast it loose, but it is insistant. He follows it back, much to his disgust, to find Nort and the acolytes, struggling in a storm of green light. He senses an almighty coming of power. He tries to make sense of it, and flashes of Suunto and the team flow though him. He was here for a skin, to get his memories, but he can not remember why he cares for them. They are of The Real. He can be in The Abstract. Nort is yelling and pointing to something. The image of his mother has a pinprick of green light, twisting and churning. Inside it, pulling at him and offering salvation, is the Jade Rhino. He reaches out for it. It is time to transcend. He casts Nort and the acolytes aside. She appears before him, the mighty body imposing. He fears and loves her. He praises her and opens his arms wide. She nuzzles him, like a welcome child, before ramming her horn into his stomach and lifting him high in the air. - think size of the rhino. It must be huge and imposing. How to get that bulk in what it is?
Leon convinces Nort to dwell awhile on his mother’s memory. Feeling the security and power of the acolytes, he pushes against the boundaries of his memory, until it starts to reach out through The Abstract and connecting to the memory of others. The room in his memory expands to represent reality, and Leon becomes aware of spaces beyond the room in his memory. The Abstract becomes more real, infused by the memories of all that have inhabited that space. He can feel them all. There have been so many, and there are others in the room behind him. He turns, to see a small hand disappearing in the doorway. He senses more conciousnesses in the next room. So many. Why are there so many in his mother’s house? He feels the connection of his mother. He turns to her and she turns to face him. She notices him, not as a child, but at the height he is as a man. She speaks to him - hello my little one - you aren’t so little now, are you? He can sense it is her. Beyond her, he can sense a lifetime of memory, but they are beyond him.
Ms. Penumbra Sequences Flow She returns to her apartment and has another smaller moment stuck with her memory, but this time she has a sense of the present, which is never the way. It is as if she is living both places at once. He says he misses her. He has not done that before. He should have died after The ImpVerse, not before. She compares the size of her memory from when she was first diagnosed and took a scan, to now. She has lost so much, but retained the ones that matter. She curses Variel and the Catholics. But how would they have known? It would have to be the confesional. If it was The Abstract, she would know about it. She plugs herself in to a machine and starts to sort through the memories of her day. She runs an algorythm and automatically isolates the memories that have no meaning, and dispels them. There are too many frivilous memories to purge. At this stage of the game, it is all about the end goal. There are so many memories, so many fragments, and so few connections left. She has gained three percent of her total capacity. Maybe Variel was telling the truth about trying to help her. He still betrayed her though. His stupid faith led them know about her. She curses at the Catholics - whomever they may be. It makes sense to her though. Did she really think they would just take what she is doing without fighting back? She wonders how getting rid of her would save them though. She is not ImpCorp. ImpCorp is so much bigger than her and there will be another to step into her role when she is gone. There is too much at stake for them not to have someone grubby. It will likely be her first in command that takes over. At least, in the Real. Being dead won’t stop her from being in control. There are too many balls in the air, and she has not figured out how to get Leon into the inner sanctum yet. She has to hope they have enough nouse to figure that one out themselves. She can get them to a port, but after that Leon will have to figure it out from there.
She gets a call from her contact in the Executive, but she cannot take it at the moment. She should have told her when to call back. It would be too soon after the Executive meeting. It is risky - she would be watched. Then again, she has been doing it for years, and she has not been caught, yet. She calls, slightly drunk.

Chasing The Rhino Masterlist
Turning Point Two
Leon and Suunto meet Ms. Penumbra, who proposes the team infiltrate ImpCorp and Leon agree to biological upgrades. Suunto agrees to nothing. Suunto tells Leon to seek the team’s forgiveness. Jemmy and Fix are hesitant and forges a gruesome agreement with Princess. Leon runs into Nort, his old diving partner, now a priest of the Jade Rhino church. Leon is tempted, but knows diving will undo the team’s fragile trust. Leon wakes to his team arguing and accusing him of deep diving, which he denies. He has been operated on, presumably by Ms. Penumbra. He should feel violated and angry, but is curiosity draws him to the possibilities of his new technology. Suunto is furious, but Leon says he may have inadvertently agreed to the upgrade and insists the job continue, despite Ms. Penumbra’s audacity. He wants access.
Step One
Setup
Leon and Suunto meet Ms. Penumbra, their new client, who proposes they open a lock to the inner sanctum of The Abstract within the ImpCorp building. Leon does his best to profile her, but cannot stop thinking of the stories of her relentlessness and power.
She insists on using Leon’s deep diving capabilities and offers advanced technological implants to assist. Leon wants access to The Abstract from within ImpCorp but doubts his resolve in controlling his addiction. She has a tight timeline and will provide them with key information and an obscenely large reward if they are successful.
Suunto confirms their involvement relies on finding the right players and will let her know when she has them.
On leaving, Leon is told some members of the team are not keen on his involvement and he is instructed to make peace with them, tonight. She is unsure if they will work with him again.
CDQ
WIll Leon be able to convince the team to work with him again?
CDQ -
WIll Leon be able to convince the team to work with him again?
Step Two
Leon uses his memory device to project his newly enhanced childhood memory onto the kitchen in his apartment - a slightly inaccurate replica constructed from a fragmented version of the same memory. He examines it and reflects on the dangers of enhancements offered by Ms. Penumbra. Jemmy unlocks his door and arrives, without Fix. She is angry. Fix arrives from the Imp-Verse, and tries to comfort Leon as Jemmy illogically blames him for Fix’s death. She gradually settles with the help of alcohol, Fix and running out of ways to insult Leon. Leon explains and apologises and tries to reassure her that he will not get lost deep diving The Abstract again. He knows this is something he cannot guarantee. Jemmy agrees to meet with him in the morning, if he survives his encounter with Princess.
Step Three
Complication 2
Leon seeks out the ‘enforcer’, the emotional, theatrical and violent Princess, in a crumbling theatre. He discovers Hamelin, unconscious, strung up and bleeding as part of a disturbing set in front of a small audience and he fears for his life. The tableau shifts from murder to casual live interview. Princess relates her desire to be absorbed by Keres - an ancient Greek bringer of death, but her restraint allows her to rejoice in her body and training. She likens it to his draw to The Abstract and the Jade Rhino who takes the souls of deep divers. Leon and Princess reach forge a deal - Princess gets to cut Leon’s throat if he ever is taken by Jade Rhino, in exchange for freeing Hamelin and attending a meeting with Suunto in the morning.
Step Four
Leon is enticed by Nort to enter the Church of the Rhino and they talk of Nort’s new perspective of The Jade Rhino as angel rather than devil. Leon is unnerved by the iconography and the admiration of the junkies who refer to him as Jade’s Chosen, after Nort and Leon’s close encounter with The Jade Rhino during their last dive together. Suunto calls, and warns Leon not to dive with Nort. The team will not be impressed if he does., so he backs out, knowing he needs to regain their trust.
Step Five
Payoff
Leon wakes with Princess’s knife at his throat. She says it is lucky he twitched. Keres was tempting her. He has missed the meeting he arranged. The team arrive, arguing and assuming he has lost his way, just like last time. Hamelin scans his body and reveals an enhanced nervous system. He feels exposed, angry and vulnerable. Ms. Peunmbra saw his desire for The Abstract. Sensing the job is at stake, Leon reveals he may have unwittingly agreed to the upgrade and persuades the team to progress with the job. They want to push back against Ms. Penumbra and Leon realises he may have to work against them to temper their response.

TP 1
TP ONE Leon is hiding in an abandoned town, attempting to access a conduit with experimental technology in the hopes of connecting to The Abstract and finding his missing memories. His old partner Suunto arrives to persuade him not to use the machine and offers him a job with a client rumoured to have access to ImpCorp. Although tempted, Leon refuses as he sees no way of working with the team again after his past addiction ruined a job. Given this is his last option, Leon agrees to go with her if the machine fails to give him access. Leon gets momentary glimpse of The Abstract and its raw power, before the machine explodes and he is forced to destroy it all and flee with Suunto before security arrives.
Central Dramatic Question - will Leon get access to The Abstract using his machine?
TP1 Character Arc - Leon moves from being determined and reckless by using the machine - to - being intimidated by the vast power of The Abstract and nervous about having to return with Suunto.

STEP 1: SETUP Leon is examining a childhood memory of his mother on a portable projection device as a way to steady his mind. He observes a distant city and feels a desire to return to his former life, which he quickly dismisses, although his concentration is ruined. Frustrated, his attention is drawn to the pit and the machine that he hopes will enable him to access The Abstract.
SEQ 1 Leon examines a fragmented memory from his childhood on an external memory recording device, in a dilapidated house, overlooking a distant city as a way to steady his mind. He delves into the memory, searching for details unknown, despite knowing there is nothing left to discover. It has been enhanced as much as technology allows. He replays and mimics the voice of his mother as she speaks and pauses the image on the half of her face that is exposed and touches his own, trying to connect through physical resemblance. He feels a sense of calm by examining her. He wants to recover his missing memories and the damaged image of his mother. He wants to know who she is and what happened to her. He thinks accessing The Abstract at its source is his only way to restore them, and for that, he needs calm. STEP ONE CDQ Will Leon find a sense of calm in order to access The Abstract?
SEQ 2 Leon looks to the city in the distance and remembers his time there - indulgence driven benders deep diving The Abstract. He feels an urge to deep dive in The Abstract again, and his body reacts, showing signs of his former addiction and destroying the calm he created. SEQ 3 Frustrated and angry and himself, he takes control of his breathing. He reminds himself that this time will be different. He will be in control. He looks to the broken, antique wrist watch on his wrist. He considers pulling it apart again and reassembling the parts, but there is no time. He laughs at the irony.
CDQ ANSWER No, he does not achieve the sense of calm he was longing for, and instead must make the attempt slightly agitated.
CHARACTER ARC Calm and concentrating deep in a memory - to - somewhat agitated.
STEP 2: COMPLICATION Suunto, his former business partner arrives and tells him she wants him for an upcoming job rumoured to involve ImpCorp. She may have another way in. The client has asked for him directly. Leon is intrigued, but refuses as it will involve him going back to the city and the team he let down. Suunto tells him of her conversation with the engineer who helped him create the machine in the pit, and how he does not believe it will work. She is here to talk him out of using it. There is a monthly drop in pressure in the conduit due in a few minutes, so he is going to try anyway. If it doesn’t work, and he survives, Leon agrees to come back with her to meet the client, but does not commit to do the job.
SEQ 1 Leon’s attention is drawn to the Abstract hacking machine at the bottom of the pit. He tells himself it is not like before and that he is the one in control now. He tells himself it will work, but knows accessing The Abstract this way is a risk. His old boss and business partner, Suunto arrives in spectacular fashion, complaining about having to wear boots. She has not seen him in almost a year, and knows it must be important for her to track him down. Leon says he is not coming back, no matter what she has to offer. He is focused on the machine, and the upcoming pressure drop that will give his machine the best shot at accessing ImpCorp through the underground conduit.
STEP CDQ Will Leon use the device to get access to The Abstract?
SEQ2 Suunto reveals there are two reasons why she is there: the engineer contacted her to say you are about to kill yourself with the machine, and she may have a way into ImpCorp. Leon is dismissive of the first reason, and enticed by the second, but is determined to use his machine. He has invested too much time and all of his remaining resources in creating it. Seeing he is in ‘one of his moods’, she offers to assist on condition that if his ‘mind doesn’t melt’ by using the machine, that he at least come back to meet the client with her. He agrees, but knows that if the machine works like he wants it to, there will be no need to access ImpCorp anyway.
SEQ3 Leon explains to Suunto the light bars on the dashboard determine the strength of the connection, using an old traffic light system. If failsafe doesn’t kick in and the lights hit red, he is likely dead and she should hit the button above the doorway to set off a series of explosives and run. Initially, Suunto thinks he is joking. Leon injects himself with a needle and watches his blood fill the tubes on the dashboard. The next step is the send the blood through the tubes to the machine in the pit, where he will hopefully get access.
CDQ ANSWER Leon will use the device, but he is unsure whether it will gain him access, or kill him.
STEP CHARACTER ARC Leon moves from slightly annoyed, but also pleased by Suunto’s arrival - to - strangely calm and comforted by having Suunto with him.
STEP 3: PAYOFF Leon has his subconscious sucked into The Abstract using the conduit and his mind gets a sense of it’s vast, overwhelming power and his insignificance. The memory he used to access The Abstract becomes vivid. It is only momentary though, and he is thrown back to The Real (reality). His mind struggles with connecting to his body and The Real. He is shocked back to reality with a stimulant to find his machine destroyed. Suunto notices a line of flying objects moving from the city towards their location. Realising he must have triggered an alarm, he sets off a series of small explosives that bury his device and collapse the building. Suunto and Leon flee into the ruins.
CDQ ANSWER - Yes, he gets access, but it is only momentary and reaffirms how unprepared he is.
TP1 CA - Leon moves from being determined and reckless by using the machine - to - being intimidated by the vast power of The Abstract and nervous about having to return with Suunto.
SEQ 1 Leon watches his blood flow along a fine tube, over the edge of the pit, to conduit hacking machine. He places his memory into the dashboard and it rises before them. Suunto comments that it is always that memory he uses to access The Abstract. Leon tells her it is his only one. He draws himself into the memory and hears the machine activate as the pressure in the conduit drops.
STEP CDQ - Will Leon get access to The Abstract through the machine?
SEQ 2 He sees the dashboard before him explode. He is torn from The Real and into The Abstract. His conscious is violently torn apart. He loses sense of himself and becomes the boy in his memory. The memory is The Real to him. He sees his mother’s ImpCorp uniform and hears her melodic Irish accent say, ‘I hear you, my little one.’ He feels the joy of child caught sneaking up on his mother.
SEQ 3 Leon is pulled back to The Real just as violently as he entered. Suunto pulls a needle from his arm. He feels the rush of the stimulant and is shocked to find himself a man again. Leon mutters, ‘it worked.’ Suunto points to the shattered dashboard and the hissing and smoke pouring from the pit. Leon goes to the pit to find his machine being swallowed by the strange Abstract fluid pouring from the pipe. It rolls like tentacles over the device, tearing it apart.
SEQ 4 Leon knows his resources are depleted and destroyed. He downloads the now full memory to his device. He now knows The Abstract can heal his mind if he can get enough access and survive the process. Suunto tells him it is time to leave and points to a line of approaching lights from the city. Leon sees the are security drones, coming to investigate the breach. He gathers his escape pack and pulls the lever above the doorway. The flee as a series of small explosives destroy the house. Leon curses the loss of his machine, but also knows that he may have another way into ImpCorp and access to The Abstract. He is not going to lose that opportunity.
STEP CDQ ANSWER Leon does get access, but it almost kills him with its power and it destroys his machine.
CHARACTER ARC Leon moves from a mixture of calm, anticipation and recklessness- to - feeling intimidated by the power of The Abstract and fueled with a confidence that he will access The Abstract again.
scenes
These are meant to align with each of the sequences….
The mist is starting to roll in over the valley below - a bit earlier than usual, as it is only late afternoon. Leon sits in a dilapidated dining chair in front of a half boarded up window. He has portable memory projector in his hands, about the size of a phone, and he turns it on by pricking himself on an exposed needle. He knows a small tentacle has inserted itself in his thumb, but he has long since lost the feeling. He is feeling somewhat nervous, and wants to calm himself. This memory is the way to do it. The memory appears before him a virtual scene, half in reality and half digital projection. It is washed out, grainy in parts and has small elements missing. He is looking through the eyes of a child: himself. He sees what appears to be his mother, from a low angle. He sees her turn around to him, her face obscured somewhat by the sun streaming through the window behind her. He feels her warmth and his body reacts to her, like it would have as a child. ‘How did you get in here? You’re meant to be sleeping.’ Leon says the words as she says them, in almost perfect pitch and tone. There is a slight accent to her words, possibly Irish. She picks him up and he is about to be drawn in to a hug, when the memory ends. Leon rewinds the memory a second and watches the moment he is picked up and hugged again. He pauses the image on half of her face and examines it through the grainy representation of her, his mother. He rotates the memory and the patchy nature of it appears clear. There are swipes of two dimensional inserts that are revealed as false when the image is rotated from the original perspective. Leon removes the parts to try and examine her from another angle. He knows he has done this a hundred times before, but he cannot help himself. It is part of his method. Examine the memory, calm his mind. He comments on her kind smile, a tinge of red in her curled hair and the curve of her jaw. He unconsciously runs his hands over his own lips, to his jaw as he watches. He is lost in the memory a moment and thinks he could have the memory enhanced again, but laughs at the thought. He has spent the last two months constructing a machine to enable him to find his memory through The Abstract. SEQ 2 He switches off the memory device and looks through the glass of the window. ImpCity is in the distance. The late afternoon fog already obscures its base and vessels move through the sky in ordered lines. The work day is almost done. It is time for families to plug themselves into The Abstract and forget their existence in The Real. Leon feels the pull of it all: the people moving in lines, which merge into neon lights, which merge into coloured cables that connect to a porting machine. A flashback - He is swamped by an image of Nort, his Abstract diving buddy. ‘Let’s chase that rhino, man.’ Leon pushes a tube into his arm and the blood starts to drain from him. Leon recovers from the flashback and puts a hand to his elbow. It is a mass of scar tissue where he has had the port removed. He stands up and the chair clatters next to him. His mind is a mess of desire for The Abstract, the fingers of his right hand type an unconscious code and his lips smack together. ‘No. Not now. No time. Not now.’ The taste of his addiction has returned, although not as strong as before, it still itches and calls him back to the life he left. He places his hands against the window frame and works to control his breathing. The memory device is clutched too tightly in his hand and he places it on the window sill. He returns to his breathing and he feels the lure of The Abstract slowly fade. Leon tells himself that all he needs is a bit of time and some calm. His old mechanical watch is on his wrist, and he foolishly looks to it. He does not have the parts. He laughs, which helps to break the lure of The Abstract.
step 2 scene Leon slips the memory device into his pocket and sits on the window sill. He steadies his breathing and tracing the cables from the porting device, just like the one in his memory to a pit in the middle of the room. ‘It’s not like before,’ he mutters. ‘You’re in control now.’ He works on his breathing against the tide of his addiction. He knows he is not in control, but he needs to take the shot at connecting to The Abstract. He wants to find his missing memories, and The Abstract is the place where memory thrives. ADD IN SOMETHING - a mother duck always knows where her babies are, my dear. or something motherly. or ’you think I wouldn’t know where you were? It’s me, Leon. I keep track of everything. ’You’ve really moved up in the world, Leon’ Suunto arrives in the doorway, cocktail in hand, black party dress with heavy, elaborately decorated boots. ‘I know you depend on me, sweetie. You’re living worse than when I found you. I had to wear boots, damn it! Boots! You know I don’t wear anything with less than a three inch heel.’ ‘I’m not coming back.’ He quickly says. He moves from the window, to the port. She pouts, feigning disappointment. ‘You don’t even know what I have to offer.’ ‘I didn’t know you owned boots. Where do you get boots like that?’ ‘Custom, my love. I designed them for something that will likely make you a little embarrassed. But if you really want to know…’ Leon shook his head. He made the mistake once. Even his therapist told him to stop talking to him about it. ‘Never do.’ He turns on the porting machine and a soft green light pulses on the machine. A corresponding light pulses on his left forearm. A strip of light races from it and pulses along his arm, outlining a six by four grid of letters, numbers and symbols that interchange in time with the pulses. ‘Going somewhere? I thought you’d given up?’ ‘I have.’ ‘It doesn’t look like it.’ ‘I haven’t since I left. This is different. I’m going into ImpCorp.’ ‘So I’ve heard.’ Leon looks confused. She should know nothing of this. “I doubt it.’ As soon as he says it, he knows that it is her business to know. ‘Who?’ ‘I had a call from a rather flustered engineer you might know.’ Suunto moves from the doorway, towards the pit. Leon shakes his head. The engineer who helped him build the machine must have talked to her. ‘Apparently, you are thinking of doing something quite rash, and using a machine to access The Abstract using a conduit.’ She looks in the pit. ‘That is one impressive looking way to kill yourself, Leon. How did you find an underground conduit anyway?’ Leon feels himself calm, despite his predicament. Being with Suunto does that to him. Despite the situation and the pressure, she always had a way of calming him. ‘I’ll be fine.’ ‘That’s not what your little engineer friend say. He said you are likely to fry that lovely brain of yours. Something about pressures and a lot of guesswork.’ ‘It’s not guesswork. The pressure will be fine. There is a dip in pressure coming in..’ he twitches his fingers and taps at his forearm keyboard. ‘four minutes and seventeen seconds. I’ll be fine.’ There is a silence. Leon pulls a needle from the porting machine. With his permanent port removed, he is going to have to create the blood connection the old fashioned way. As he is about to start drawing blood for the porting machine, Suunto says she has a client that she thinks is from ImpCorp. Leon hesitates with the needle at his skin. Sensing she has his attention, she continues, telling him that she also asked for him by name. This could be a way in for them. Leon says he has prepared too long for this. He is not going to risk a sure way to access it, for a rumour. She says that her rumours are as much rumours as his guesswork is guesswork. Leon smiles. She is wrong. His guesswork is guesswork, but a way to touch The Abstract through a conduit is too much to resist. He is going to do it anyway. He tells her he is going to do it, no matter what she says. She can see he will not back down, so she proposes that if his brain is not melted by the machine, that he will come back and do the job. He does not want to return. He has too much guilt to work with the team again. She tells him she will smooth the waters for him if he does return. He refuses again. The timer is counting down. He agrees to her proposal to at least meet the client if the machine fails. He injects his blood into the machine by directly placing a needle in his arm. Suunto comments on his missing port. Leon says that cold turkey was the best way, and she nods. He watches it pump from the porting machine to the device in the pit. She asks how she will know the machine is frying his brain. He directs her to a small screen with three green bars. The bars rise with the strength of the connection, from green to amber to red. If all three bars hit the upper reaches of Amber, he has a protocol in the machine to cut the connection. She should not need to do anything. If it doesn’t work and it hits red, he is likely dead. Just press the big red button above the door and run. She laughs, thinking it is a joke, but its not.
step three scene
Leon watches the blood pump from his arm, along the small pipes, over the edge of the pit. He cannot see the machine, but he imagines the vials filling. He pulls the memory device from his pocket and removes the chip withing. He places it in the porting device and his memory rises before them. Suunto says, ‘It’s always that memory, isn’t it.’ Leon replies ‘It’s the only one I have.’ - this reveals how desperate his search is. This is his only one from his past, and the clarity of his memories seems to fade quicker than most - it is actually because there is a dampener in his brain that is designed to suppress his ability to remember long term memory. The pressure drops and the machine in the pit punctures the conduit. He is ripped from the real and tastes the torrent that is The Abstract. It happens in a split second. Once moment, he sees the porting machine flash red and the screen exploding. As if caught in a hurricane, he is thrown about from nothing to fragments of memory to nothing again. He feels his conscious torn apart. He loses sense of his body and thought, and the memory he used to access The Abstract appears to him fully, in an instant. He is thrown into his memory. His mother’s face appears before him, her ImpCorp uniform, the smell of a newly cleaned, white surface, the extra song in her voice. The sunlight, actually an overhead light, the childhood longing to be picked up, overwhelming. The memory is torn apart as quickly as it appeared. He finds himself, screaming and laughing in pain, back in The Real. Suunto is pulling a needle from his arm. He is back in The Real again, connected to his body. He feels the blood trickle from his arm. Suunto slaps him and tells him to get focus. Leon feels what must have been a stimulant, course through him. The Real snaps back to him, but he still sees aspects of his memory blurring into The Real. He is drawn to the details he previously did not have. He mutters that ‘It worked.’ ‘No, it didn’t. You almost killed yourself, and worse, you made me spill my drink.’ There is a screaming noise coming from the pit. Leon makes his way there and looks down He can see the coloured, biological ooze leaking into the pit. It churns over the machine in the bottom of the pit, slapping it with what appears to be wet tentacles of pulsing goo. The machine is in pieces. Leon curses. The machine was the last of his wages. He hears his mother’s voice in his head, the phrase repeated from his memory, with a new phrase added - ‘my little one’. He copies the memory to his memory device in an instant, not trusting that it will stay in his head when all the others have disappeared. He is pulled back from his memory again by Suunto pointing out the window. A line of lights, indicating vehicles, blinks in the distance, from the city, moving towards them at great speed. ’I think your little experiment is over, Leon. Leon sees the approaching lights - attack drones and security no doubt. He wonders if he has time to salvage the machine in the pit, but knows he does not. He does not want to return to the city with Suunto. He does not want to reconnect with the team. He is not ready as the guilt is still too strong. Suunto hurries him. He grabs a backpack, places his memory device in it and takes a last look at his hovel. He hits the button above the door. Suunto says ’At least I wore the right shoes.’ They run to the sound of small explosives triggering and a house collapsing behind them.

He must find Nort, absorb the skin and somehow be ready for the job in six days.
CDQ Answer
No. They find themselves in an even worse position. Suunto is compromised and the conditions of the job have become near impossible.
Character Arc
Leon moves from a strange mix of anger and shame —- to —- feeling protective of Suunto and anxious at having Ms. Penumbra ride in his mind pocket. He is overwhelmed by the timeline.
Moral Dilemma
He can only get into ImpCorp by accepting impossible conditions. Leon wants access to ImpCorp, and compromises on a few points that increase his risk, in order to get his missing memories. He is conflicted by his desire to access ImpCorp and the impossible security and timeline. He wishes to protect Suunto, but also gain access to Impcorp. He wishes to find his missing memories while in ImpCorp, but cannot do so with Ms. Penumbra in his mind pocket.
Ms. P SEQ ONE
Ms. Penumbra reflects on her panic at Suunto’s arrival and chastises Variel for having Leon there. They talk of her dementia corrupting her mind. She purges segments of her memory, but will not diminish her memories of Emmit, her dead lover. She agrees to a biological adaption to enhance her short term capability but speed her decline. Variel reveals he is satisfied with the upgrade he performed on Leon but suggests dampening his one strong memory, as it will feed his addiction. She dismisses him. Her concern is to get Leon into ImpCorp, stall the Executive and find out who betrayed her.
Overview possibilities
Leon is surprised when Ms. Penumbra enters Variel’s examining room. Variel protests about the intrusion, but Leon stops him. Ms. Penumbra asks Leon about Variel before asking him to leave, and he does so at Leon’s insistance. Leon establishes a link with Suunto and alerts her to Ms. Penumbra’s presence, as he knows Suunto will be keen to re-establish the boundaries and control of the team’s working relationship with Ms. Penumbra.
Leon, despite being angry at Ms. Penumbra upgrading his body without his consent, adopts a casual manner. Leon tries to read her, like he would a mark, but he struggles. Ms. Penumbra asks about Variel and what he does, and examines Variel’s notes on Leon as they talk, and she notes his non-existent long term memory scan. She engages in a philosophical conversation about memory, and despite Leon’s initial hesitation, he finds himself intrigued by her. They ruminate on the role memory plays in the formation of identity and she considers Leon lucky. He can reinvent himself, unburdened by the past, but also states that there are moments in the past that steer her, even now. She can see that one memory shines for Leon, and it is most likely the one that steers him now. Leon is confused by her candor. Suunto arrives, surprising Ms. Penumbra. She asks about her security, and when Princess arrives, blood covering her knuckles, Ms. Penumbra laughs and concedes control when Suunto asserts the boundaries of their relationship. But Leon senses she is not tamed. - shorten.
Ms. Penumbra reveals the details of the ‘Skin’ - the person Leon will impersonate and the difficult security protocols he will have to overcome to gain access. Leon is unnerved by the rigour, but is confident he can do it with enough time. Ms. Penumbra reveals Leon is meeting his ‘Skin’ in a nearby bar in two hours and Suunto protests. Leon is frustrated by not knowing what they are stealing. Ms. Penumbra reveals the job will need to be done in six days and Suunto immediately tells her it cannot be done. Suunto asserts the job is off. Leon is conflicted and he can see it all slipping away and must find a way for the job to go ahead.
s motion to leave, Ms. Penumbra says a word that stops Suunto. Leon catches a glimpse of Suunto’s fear and he realises Ms. Penumbra has them. Suunto asks Princess and Leon to leave, but Ms. Penumbra tells Leon to stay. Suunto nods in agreement. Ms. Penumbra asserts she will take part, riding inside Leon’s mind pocket. Leon knows if she does that, he will have no opportunity to search for his missing memories without her knowing.
They talk of memories and the nature of remembering. Would he have been a different person if he was able to remember his past? The nature of forgetting. If you could not remember the things you have done, would that make you a better person? Are we tied to our past, and the things we have done, or should be just work to living in the future, and deciding who we want to be? She thinks he has it easy. He can be whoever he wants, and he can make it so. He is not weighed down by the past. She has to sit with the things she has done, although she knows there are a few regrets, it is not over the decisions she made. It was that she did not go hard or fast enough. If she had started earlier, she would not be so rushed for time - spend more time here to refine the theme
the mark is a few blocks away in the newer parts of the city. It was hard to get him that far from his apartment and had to be coerced. Suunto insist the man gets a nice surprise, instead of being hospitalised or go missing for a few days. Leon says he will let her know what he promises him when the meeting is finished. It will likely be something nice. They decide plane tickets to a lovely tropical island - not many left that do tourism now. Some places, but not many. Bali is still going. Send him there - to hang out with some fun people when he realises the job doesn’t actually exist. Maybe a tour guide arranged as an apology from the company. He just needs to be gone for a few days, then shifted to another building so the timelines don’t look out. Ms. P laughs and agrees. She will be nice for a change.
they push back against Ms. P, thinking they have the upper hand. They think she has just visited Leon’s doctor to check up on Leon, rather than seek her own treatments. Or maybe the get her as she is on her way to see him? They think she is tracking Leon, trying to find out what the doctor knows, but really, she is going to see him about her own needs. Maybe Suunto and the team are arriving to pick him up to meet Ms. Penumbra again, when Princess decides the security detail is light enough and their opportunity to reassert themselves is now. Keres says it is a good time. Suunto agrees. Ms. Penumbra seems surprised, and starts to say they were not due to meet for another hour. Princess knocks out two of her three security, before disabling a third with zip ties. Ms. Penumbra claps and says if she wants a job, she has one. Suunto approaches with Princess and Leon. Suunto suggests they have a chat in the vehicle, and Ms. Penumbra obliges. Suunto wishes to establish the boundaries of their working together, and Ms. Penumbra is non- committal, saying that she rarely has to ask permission of anyone. In her world, she has control. She promises not to operate on anyone else without their explicit consent, but also asks Leon if he has tried it out yet. Leon shakes his head. She asks Leon if he was visiting the man inside - she says she has heard he has an illegal workshop - is that right? Leon says he is harmless, but has a good body scanner. She says she was going to check that out for herself. What he has inside him is official ImpCorp technology - not seen outside the building. She was passing and was going to make sure that none of those scans made it out of his office. Leon says she should not do anything to him. He just does a few odd jobs to help the community out. She laughs. She does not care about him. She was just going to ask him nicely, with lots of cash, to hand over the scans. He should not be so dramatic.
They talk of the job, their requirements of silence from Ms. P, unless they have a question or she has essential information from them. Ms. P is non-committal, but will see how the meeting goes. They need a mark that physically matches Leon. He needs to modify his though patterns as well, by setting up a meeting in Leon’s mind pocket - a working thing - he will need recordings of his meetings, interactions in ImpCorp to assimilate the sayings, the gestures and such. She is impressed with the thorough nature of his work, and Suunto reveals that he does not use AI to infiltrate. It is all Leon. The AI only looks for irregularities externally. If he can look and act like him, the AI will ignore him. A few small body modifications as well, and the AI will think it is him. She is impressed. She matches his body characteristics with seventeen employees regionally. One is perfect, and local, but no bioscan. One is required to access the areas she needs him to go. Suunto calls Fix and asks him if he can find a way to put in a bioscan. He says it should not be a problem, as long as he has enough details and a key to the lock. A three second window is all he needs. Ms. Penumbra verifies it is possible. When the mark is integrated into Leon, they can do the bioscan, supplement it with the pre-upgrade one, and he will be that dude. Ms. P says she will arrange for the mark to disappear so they can do what they need do. Suunto says he should only disappear if he is going to someplace nice. Ms.P laughs and asks what she has in mind. She was thinking short hospitalisation, but if they have a better idea, then go for it. They suggest he is called on a last minute job somewhere tropical - only to discover it has been an administrative error and has to spend a few days, relaxing in paradise - but the company is so sorry, that they arrange a fun filled few days - snorkeling, plenty of drinks, a bit of romance… Ms. P laughs and says she will see what she can do. Sedatives is usually quicker and easier. Suunto says, ‘but not as fun, or kind.’
Security - friendly front desk that hides multiple scanners - If Leon is as good as he says, then he will get through. The AI will scan him as an employee. Once in Ms. P will guide him. No way, there are too many variables there, and they do not trust her with his life? This is the option available for him.
She wants to be part of the mission, and this is the only way she can see it working. He needs to access sensitive areas, and she can’t divulge any more to them. She can tell them the floor, the port, but where he needs to go, only a few people have access - this will help me figure out what is going on as I progress.
The mission needs to be sorted here - at least in some form. She can provide some things, but there are parts ImpCorp she has not seen in decades.
only to find out they are well and truly trapped by her. She has them in a noose, already, but she is not surprised or offended. The little fish always seem to think they are bigger than they are. She uses the opportunity to leverage a bit more from them and tell them they need to move on the job in weeks, not months. They say it is impossible, and she asks if it will take more manpower. It wont. It is the difficulty of the job. There is no other choice. Ms. P will arrange the information they need. They just need to do it, and do it well. Suunto and Leon realise they are caught tighter than they would have liked, and have no other option but to get it done. Leon tells her he will meet her at the bar - The Abstract one - to discuss it. They are going to need to use the time advantage provided by The Real to figure out how to make it work.
