So, How do we use all of this new knowledge?

  • we need to know how our text embodies some aspects of the context of produciton: how it captures the zeitgeist, or has apsects of thoughts of relects the world that existed at the time, like ideologies, values, attitudes and more…

Two: Oscar Wilde

Who is Oscar Wilde?

Oscar Wilde Biography: His Wild” Life

Oscar Wilde’s Role in Literature’s Aesthetic Movement”

Walter Pater in England and Theophile Gautier in France influenced the movement with their theorizing about it. Gautier in France said: Nothing is really beautiful unless it is useless. Everything useful is ugly for it expresses a need, and the needs of men are ignoble and disgusting, like his poor, weak nature.

Three: Aestheticism

This will hurt your brain. Take your time. Ask lots of questions.

Take notes on the four clips below. It starts off a bit easier and does get really twisted in terms of the arguments put forward. The topic is a deeply philosophical one and will likely hurt you a little. You are not meant to get it first time through.

Take your time. Ask clarifying quesitons and have the discussions that need to take place in order to understand the concept.

You will likley discover conceptual links to TPODG throughout the text. Make note of them as you go.

The exposition is the start of a text.

It comes under the umbrella of the narrative feature: plot.

The features of an exposition are that they introduce:

How are we positioned in regard these things? What else can you discover?

Floriography

What do the flowers symbolize in the novel the picture of Dorian Gary?”

Study on garden scene in chapter 1-2 The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden, there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pink-flowering thorn (Wilde 1).

TP/S

Sequence One

Suunto and Leon make their way through the less-reputable quarters of Imp-City at night. The ImpCorp residential high rises dominate the skyline and the growing city looks like a depiction of a retro styled future from the 1980’s. Suunto reflects on how when she last saw him, he was lost, broken and barely recognisable and Leon comments on his long journey back to himself in the abandoned town. Their openness, honesty and banter re-establishes their bond. Suunto reveals she has been unable to discover the identity of the client, but knows it involves ImpCorp. Leon is confused, as Suunto insists on knowing her client. This is an exception she has made for Leon. They get more information from the intermediary at the meeting tonight.

CDQ -

Will Leon and Suunto take the job with the mystery client?

Sequence Two

The client is unexpectantly present at the meeting. Ms Penumbra is the secretive member of ImpCorp - an executive whose intermediary has close connections to the criminal world. She needs Leon to make his way through intimidating layers of security, access the original mechanism that stabilised The Abstract and extract a code before an upgrade in 70 days.  Leon struggles to comprehend the opportunity presented to him. If he can find his memories anywhere, it will be there. Her knows the security measures will be greater than he has faced before. He must now find a way to plan quickly and get through the more layers of security than he has before.

Sequence Three

Ms. Penumbra insists that  Leon to access The Abstract from the mechanism, and not destroy his mind, that he agree to a new port and some minor alternations to his neural pathways and that he deep dive to prepare himself. Suunto does not agree to Leon deep diving or the implants, but Leon’s curiosity of the mechanism overrides his sensibility and he breaks protocol and asks a question of the mechanism. Ms. Penumbra is pleased by his involvement and entices him with her vague answer, but Suunto cuts off Leon’s chance to satisfy his curiosity in order to resume negotiations. Leon considers the offer of enhancements, but is unsure if he is willing to engage with them again. The last ones he had fed his deep diving and led him further from The Real. Leon must now find a way to deep dive, without losing control of his addiction and letting the team down again.

Sequence Four

Ms. Penumbra insists of being involved in the heist, at every step, and makes a exorbitant offer for access to their planning and execution.  Suunto says she will consider her offer and terms, but everything relies on finding the right people. Ms. Penumbra gives them until noon tomorrow to decide. They leave and Suunto tells Leon he has to make peace with some members of the team tonight, as she is unsure if they will work with him again. Leon is intimidated by the prospect of meeting with the people he angered and walked out on, but his desire to access ImpCorp means he has to make peace. He is unsure how though, as when trust is broken in their world, it is rarely repaired. He must now find a way.

CDQ Answer

Leon wants to take the job, but he is unsure how he will make peace with members of the team.

Character Arc

Leon is excited for his new chance at accessing ImpCorp and The Abstract, but also haunted by his recent past - to - intrigued about the possibilities of the job and intimidated and uncomfortable about having to confront his past mistakes with the team.

Moral Dilemma

Leon must consider whether he compromise the boundaries of his body to allow unknown surgery to take place in order to access The Abstract at the source. By doing so, he loses some of himself in The Real in order to move further towards his addiction and the risk of never coming back to The Real. It is a move towards accessing his memories, which he hopes will ground him in The Real, but to do so, he must move away from The Real, and make his journey back harder. Adding in more implants increases his ability to dive deeper, and increases the risk of losing his way back to The Real.

# TP4 - S3 - Sequences

40 Writing/Chasing The Rhino/TP4

Step Three

Fix and Hamelin shield Leon from the AI security with the assistance of Ms. Penumbra, who guides him through the restricted access. Leon’s glitches means he loses Princess during a fight and he takes a beating. When moving through a restricted area, he must give Ms. Penumbra total control of his mind to bypass security and the AI memory scan. He makes it through, but she now knows every secret. He also has serious reservations about his ability to maintain a connection to The Abstract.

Sequence One

Leon, Fix and Hamelin figure a way of using a rat to shield their biology from the AI, but he must be holding it. Leon hates rats. Leon, with Princess’s violent and chemical solutions, makes his way from the cells, although he struggles with his connection to The Real. His vision has a jade tint, and he sees memories that are not his own. Princess, with Ms. Penumbra’s encouragement, wants to cause some damage before she leaves, but Leon is focussed on making it to the inner chamber, where the expects to find him mother.

CDQ -

Will Leon make it to the inner chamber of ImpCorp to the machine that controls the connection to The Abstract?

Sequence Two

Leon moves through a building past thousands of workers, most of which access The Abstract. He passes a vial of Abstract fluid, and finds his conscious pulled to it. He loses sense of The Real and feels himself absorbed by it. When he returns to The Real, he is in a small room, with a security guard examining him, and the rat hidden in his clothes. By giving Princess control of his body, he is able to fight off the guard, but his fleeting connection means he takes a beating. He knows that he does not have much time before the unconscious guard wakes.

Sequence Three

Leon is confronted by a mind scanner at the inner chamber. He figures the only way to pass it is to exploit his intermittent fade outs from The Real and completely draw Ms. Penumbra into his mind, which will enable her complete access to his body and consciousness. He gains access, but Ms. Penumbra hesitates in leaving, asking him about his deceptions, his mother and his missing memories. He feels a great sense of vulnerability as he knows she will exploit what she has discovered.

CDQ Answer

Yes. He does get access to the chamber, but it has cost him dearly. Ms. Penumbra knows everything.

Character Arc

Leon goes from puzzled and hopeful once an apparent solution to being detected by AI security is found — to — feeling vulnerable, but resolved, in that the cost of his mind was worth entry to the chamber.

Moral Dilemma

Whether to let Ms. Penumbra into his mind in exchange for entry into the chamber. To let Ms. Penumbra to stoke Princess’s urges for destruction, and risking her being caught, to create a distraction that will draw security from him.

MS. Penumbra Sequence One

Sensing an opportunity to drive the illusionary Catholic plot against ImpCorp, Ms. Penumbra entices Princess to prepare to cause a disruption. She converses with Fix, Suunto and Jem about her transition problem, but they only have untested theories, using underworld tricker schemes. She can see how their ideas, conceptually, may work, but there is no practical solution as yet. On the closing of the call, she recieves notification that the first of the executions is underway.

CDQ -

Will Ms. Penumbra find a workable solution to avoid ImpCorp copying the sensitive information from her conscious as she transitions to The ImpVerse?

MS. Penumbra Sequence Two

Ms. Penumbra agrees to the team’s proposal and runs an algorithm that copies her secret memories and information to a Suunto controlled memory vault located in The Abstract. Somehow, the team will smuggle it to her in The ImpVerse. She also sets up a verbal trigger to painfully wipe the memories and information physically from her mind before her transition. She is vulnerable, exposed and must trust Suunto. She is angry and afraid, and lashes out, using Princess to attack the building. The building unexpectably shakes at its foundations, and she laughs.

CDQ Answer

Yes, but the solution involves trusting Suunto and her team to return her power to her after the transition. She has never had to trust so completely for decades, and it disturbs her.

Character Arc

Ms. Penumbra moves from energised and agitated — to — angry, afraid and carelessly blunt in her decisions.

Moral Dilemma

To trust Suunto and the team with the information and memories she uses to leverage power, when she has no guarantee, apart from Suunto’s word, that she will return it to her.

leon two WIth Ms. Penumbra’s help, Leon is able to move through ImpCorp, now past most of security. The building, although packed with employees, few are connected to The Real. The Abstract invades the Real again, and he completely loses his connection for a period: he is immersed in thick, mottled liquid, with little sense of his physical form, as his conscious is pulled in every direction. Leon returns to The Real, only to find he is being approached by security. He is unsure where he has walked to. They attempt to restrain him, and he has to rely on Princess controlling his body to free him, although he loses the connection to her at pivotal times and does complete her moves with her brutality, which delays the fight. He manages to hide the security guard from the security AI in the toilets, although he knows his presence will be missed and will likely wake soon, without Princess’s chemical aids to keep them knocked out.

leon three

Leon arrives at the chamber to find automated AI security. He has to pass a mind scan to gain access. It was not what he expected. He calls the team, but there are no solutions for a mind scan. He struggles for a solution before realising that he may be able to defeat the machine by exploiting his unstable link to The Real and drawing Ms. Penumbra into his mind as his own connection to The Real fades out . It is the last thing he wants to do, but there is no other way. By doing so, she will know everything that he knows, including everything about his relationship with the team. He calls Suunto, who tells him it is the last thing he wants to do. She will be the fox in the chicken coop - what’s a chicken coop?; she doesn’t know. He tries to slowly trigger the process, but it comes quickly to him and he struggles to return. He tries again and manages to hold himself partially from his body, but still be aware of it. The room around him turns to soup, and he feels a strong pull towards to the room past the mind scanner. He summons the Ms. Penumbra fully into him and she seeps it into his mind, pushing his own conscious dangerously to The Abstract. He senses his tether, already tenuous, slowly stretch further. He bundles himself at the end of it, and allows Ms. Penumra into his mind and letting her memories settle into him. His body becomes her. He enters the machine, and senses from the darkness of the soup, the invasive touch of the machine, but it passes over him and settles on the Ms. Penumbra. It follows his connection to the rat - he forgot about the rat! He senses it examining the rat, before the rat, under Hamelin’s control, dies or runs out of the area, or Ms. Penumbra kills it. The chamber opens. Ms. Penumbra hesitates before she leaves his mind, talking to him about what she has discovered there. She knows everything about him now. She has been in his mind and she loves it. She knows everything, including his desire to return his mother to The Real, and his desire to find his missing memories while helping her find what she needs.

mrs P one adn two

She offers Princess some fun though violence and she heartily agrees. She will not kill anyone - they are just stooges - but she is happy to cause some distruction for Keres. Ms. Penumbra considers her mad, but is more than willing to stoke the fire. She wants her to leave, but will guide her somewhere to collect some tools to make a noise from the outside. She needs security looking outside. And she wants her to act rather catholic when she does it. Princess tells her she is catholic - just a bit lapse on the whole peace and love bit, but still has a whole lot of guilt to use. Her violence will taste very catholic. Ms. Penumbra laughs and provides her with the knowledge she needs to exit the building.

Ms. Penumbra contacts Fix and explains her problem. He has no answers, but tells him he needs time. She tells him he has no time, and that she can make his time in The ImpVerse, and for Jem’s a lot more than they had ever hoped for. She can facilitate far greater rewards, and access to new experiences, and even ways of returning to The Real through mechanical implanting of their consicousness into a human body. They are only a few years away and it will be a reality. He is tempted, but concerned about the bodies. He says they aren’t used. They’ll be fresh ones, although it will be a way he can return to The Real to be with Jem. He accepts and says he will work with the team to figure it out. He contacts Suunot, Jem and Hamelin, who look at the problem in a different way. It is all about deception and locks. She wants him to hide a safe within a safe, so when they open her mind, they dont see the next safe. Or is it a case of misdirection? They need to fool the algorythm to copying what it thinks is her conscous as it transitions? Nope. It will follow the threads and find all of it. Jem suggests that the only way to do it, is to remove the contents of the safe before the lock is opened, but leave enough reward in there to make them think it has been successful. The team agrees, but they are unsure how to do it. Leon does it when he has a skin, but they will need a mechanical way of doing it.

At least they have a theory. They ask Ms. Penumbra to start considering what she does not want them to know, and if she can get her hands on a memory machine on short notice. She laughs. She has her memory stick on her.

She allows herself to feel a bit of hope, although she knows that it will be a tough ask. She considers her backup plan of wiping select aspects of her memory, like what she has on the executive members, and definitely the shadow bishop. There are so many things she will need to wipe.

Maybe she can set up a hidden aspect somewhere in The Abstract, and get someone to guide her to it? Or is this Fix’s solution for her. It then means she has a choice of accessing all her leverage and power, or returning to the idle and reliant girl she was with Emmet? She choses the power instead? The drive is still there.

The solution provided is that she can segment protions of her memory away that she does not want discovered and he will store them on the other side of the ImpVerse. When she is safely on the other side, he will contact her and smuggle it back to her. They have smuggled in information before. They will do it again.

She will not return to that innocent girl she once was because those memories and knowledge she has is gone. She will be confused, but ultimately, she is the result of the what she has done, even if she cannot remember what she has done.

She hooks herself up to the portable memory machine in her office and does the process she has done a thousand times before. She accesses her second brain’ and allows it to blend with her own mind. There is so much she does not remember, and she finds the connection hard to maintain given her damanged brain. She knows that scanning her mind using the machine, and extracting the information that will expose her disloyalty to ImpCorp, and her contacts throughout the world will take a lot of time. She sets a word that will allow her to wipe those moments from her conscious - something that she would never speak out loud to anyone - love or mercy or emmet, or i love you. Something meaningful only to her that she would never say again. She will say it just before her transition and it will trigger a mechanism that will shatter the links to the memories. With such a large selection of memories, she knows it will hurt a great deal. But her life has been pain for the past two decades. What is one last burst of it before she never feels her body again? And if they fail to find a way to transfer it all, then she will have to exist without it all. The thought disturbs her. She has to pin her hopes on Suunto again.

She withdraws to copy her memories to a vault set up by Suunto, and uploads information from her second brain, the one used to record the memories she has been unable to hold in her decaying mind. As an added measure, she sets a code word to electrify the neurons connecting her body to the thoughts, so there can be no retrieving them in The Real after her transition. She has used the technique herself before and will not be caught again.

  • Hook up to machine, copy the memories over to a virtual place on she has access to, when she has transitioned, a timer in The Real will send a way to access it to Suunto, and she will transfer it back to her by smuggling it into The Abstract. In theory, at least.

The deletion of her memories is to be triggered by saying a line from a song her father used to sing: This time round. This time round. I’m gonna get it right. This time round.’ doesnt quite feel right. too easy? how to layer it with a bit more memory?

She contacts her money dealer and tells her to arrange the transfer of the total funds into Suunto’s account and wipe the record of it, only if she gives her authority to, verbally, or via an Abstract channel. She gives him a password she will say to authorise the transfer.

# TP2 - S3 - Sequences

TP/S Leon seeks out the enforcer’, the emotional, theatrical and violent Princess, in a crumbling theatre. He discovers Hamelin, unconscious, strung up and bleeding as part of a disturbing set in front of a small audience and he fears for his life. The tableau shifts from murder to casual live interview. Princess relates her desire to be absorbed by Keres - an ancient Greek bringer of death, but her restraint allows her to rejoice in her body and training. She likens it to his draw to The Abstract and the Jade Rhino who takes the souls of deep divers. Leon and Princess reach forge a deal - Princess gets to cut Leon’s throat if he ever is taken by Jade Rhino, in exchange for freeing Hamelin and attending a meeting with Suunto in the morning.

Sequence One

Leon arrives at Princess’s creative workspace’, a crumbling Theatre. He enters and finds himself unwittingly on stage, as part of her performance art, with a small audience watching. He is directed to sit in a single lounge chair, a steaming teacup in his hand, in a shaft of light by the audience. A twitching hand appears from above and blood drips on the coffee table. Leon realises that he may have unwittingly walked into a trap - a streamed, public display of her anger. Leon must find a way to survive the meeting with Princess in order to get her to work with him again.

CDQ -

Will Leon survive his encounter with Princess and manage to convince her to work with him again?

Sequence Two

A technologically modified rat pokes from the sleeve of the person suspended and Leon realises it must be Hamelin, a member of the team. Leon considers his return may pushed her over the edge. He stands to help Hamelin, but is slapped and falls back into the chair. He sees Princess on the edge of the shadow of light, her treasured Karambit knife illuminated in her hand. He knows she is doing it to generate fear, and it is working. He is helpless against her. He must find a way to help Hamelin and find a way to make peace with Princess.

Ms. Penumbra Sequence One

Ms. Penumbra is angry. She is close to getting what she wants from ImpCorp. She fears they know what they must never know, when Rakin, a former friend and member of the inner circle of the Executive arrives. They talk of old and changing times and her former lover Emmit, who died before the creation of the ImpVerse. He reveals the Executive have voted to transition’ her to the ImpVerse due to her health condition. It confirms her fear. She claims it must be a smear campaign and she will find out where it came from. She claims she already has a plan to transition after her intricate plan to install an accommodating Pope who would endorse the ImpVerse as a realm of Heaven, in two years. Two billion Catholics are at stake. Rakin says he will speak to the Executive to see what he can arrange, but it will not be two years. She realises she must enact her plan involving Suunto’s team,  now, and find the security leak and exert subtle pressure on The Executive to ensure she has enough time.

Sequence Three

Princess squats before the coffee table, dressed in a mishmash of culturally significant clothing and religious iconography with a jade rhino, an Abstract Junkie symbol, painted on one cheek. Princess starts her performance, talking of the Jade Rhino to the audience, how it ravages The Abstract, ripping the souls from those who venture too deep, like Leon. She tells Leon, through violent metaphorical and theatrical statements, that she was hurt by his leaving, not his failure and the only way to make it right is to cut his throat. Leon realises that he is in significant danger and must find a way to free himself and Hamelin, who may already be dead.

Sequence Four

The staging shifts to be reminiscent of a talk show. Princess interviews Leon, bringing in her own experiences of being tempted by The Keres (an ancient Greek death spirit) to commit uncontrolled, endless violence. Instead she celebrates the fluidity of violence, honed by ancient combat methods. They talk of the lure of falling into something greater, the Jade Rhino and Leon’s need to beg for forgiveness. She reveals the times she has held a knife to his throat as he dived, wanting to set him free. Leon realises how close he has come to death. She proposes that if the Jade Rhino ever takes his soul, that she be the one to cut his throat and sever the link to The Real. Leon considers the unlikely scenario, and agrees, but only if she frees Hamelin and agrees to go to a meeting with Suunto the next morning.  Princess agrees, even if Keres wants to kill him now.

CDQ Answer

Yes. Leon survives and Princess agrees to work with him again.

Character Arc

Leon moves from hesitant and anticipating pain — to — uneasy but relieved that both he and Hamelin are alive and that Princess will work with him again.

Moral Dilemma

Leon is unsure if he should agree to sacrifice his body in the future, and all hope of returning to The Real, if he is ever taken by The Jade Rhino. He is torn between working with the deeply unhinged Princess again, who seems to be getting and his desire to access ImpCorp. He knows she is integral to the team and his success.

# TP2 - S2 Sequences

TP/S

Sequence One

Leon uses his memory device to project his newly enhanced childhood memory onto the kitchen in his apartment - an inaccurate replica constructed from a fragmented version of the same memory. He marvels at his mother’s detailed face and the old ImpCorp logo on the hem of her shirt. He discovers though, the that the watch his mother wears is not the same model as the watch he is restoring. He considers how he could immerse himself and discover more of  this memory in The Abstract with the enhancements offered by Ms. Penumbra: they will provide a safety mechanism, but will likely embolden him and dismantle his hard earned defence against addiction and encourage him to go deeper. Leon hears a faint click of the lock on his front door opening. The first of team have likely arrived - Jemmy, the locksmith, and Fix, the innovator and connector of people and things. Leon catches himself in a smile, before feeling the shame of betraying their trust. Leon must now figure out how to explain himself, seek forgiveness and convince them to work with him again.

CDQ -

Will Leon convince Goby and Jemmy to work with him again?

Ms. Penumbra Sequence One

Ms. Penumbra discusses the Catholic situation’ with her assistant in her majestic office in ImpCorp - they have facilitated a splinter Catholic group that have sanctioned the ImpVerse and heaven, but the Pope will not follow. She says it is time for a more agreeable Pope and suggests they trigger the next stage. Ms. Penumbra’s mind wanders to musings and memory which frustrates her. Drained, she enters an adjacent room - her apartment - and rushes to download the day to a memory device. An executive member arrives unannounced and tries to negotiate an end to Ms. Penumbra’s hold over him in exchange for information. She is amused, and will consider it if the information warrants it. The Executive have voted to transition’ her from The Real to The Impverse, as an act of mercy’. Ms. Penumbra says they have no grounds, but she is told that whatever the evidence, it is irrefutable. Whatever it is she is hiding, they know.

Sequence Two

Jemmy arrives alone, angry and accuses Leon of being responsible for Fix’s death. Fix slides into Leon’s mind pocket from the Imp-Verse and apologises for what Leon is about to experience. Leon is confused by the ferocity of Jemmy’s anger and skewed logic. Leon had been gone eight months before Fix died. Fix apologises and commentates the steps in his wife’s tirade. Leon is confused by the surreal nature of the experience. Jemmy tells Leon she does not want to see him again and Fix tries to coach Leon in what to say to change her mind, against Leon’s better judgement. Jemmy senses Fix at work though Leon’s words and tells Fix to get out of the conversation. Leon apologises and must find a way to change her mind.

Sequence Three

Fix leaves Leon’s mind pocket and presumably into Jemmy’s. She helps herself to a strong drink, and swings from talking to Fix to slinging insults at Leon. Leon notes the softening of her insults and apologises for leaving. She rejects his apology before asking about the job she will consider working on without him’. As the mood softens, she asks for a guarantee Leon wont get lost deep diving The Abstract again, and ruin this job, like the last one. He knows that lying to a team member is not an ethical way to regains trust, but he tries to reassure her, and himself, that it will not happen. She does not believe him, but if he survives talking to Princess, she will consider meeting with Leon and Suunto in the morning. Leon must now find a way of convincing the violent and unpredictable enforcer’ of the team to work with him again.

Sequence Four

Sequence Five

CDQ Answer

Leon has likely convinced Fix to work with him again, but Jemmy is not committed. He takes Jemmy’s willingness to hear more about the job as a positive sign though.

Character Arc

Leon moves from a dreamlike state of fascination with his newly detailed memory - to - nervous about his willingness to disconnect from the truth to persuade the Jemmy to work with the team again and fearful of his upcoming encounter with Princess.

Moral Dilemma

Leon has a choice of being honest or lying about his ability to resist deep diving in The Abstract on the next job. He chooses to lie to Jemmy, but she does not believe it.
